Water, water everywhere …
Before we built miles and miles of roads, thousands of buildings and acres of sprawling parking lots, most of the rain or snowmelt simply soaked into the ground or evaporated. Today, all the buildings, roads, and parking lots force rainfall and snowmelt to run off instead of soaking into the ground. This runoff enters the storm sewer system through a storm drain.
The stormwater runoff picks up pollutants like dirt, oil and antifreeze spills, cigarette butts, and other trash. These pollutants are carried with the runoff through the storm sewer and into our creeks, lakes, and rivers.
